Until now, riders using a chain as the secondary drive on their motorcycles were forced, even with O-ring chains, to clean, lubricate, and adjust them regularly. All this now comes to an end thanks to this innovative chain. The new HPE Z-ring chain offers, for the first time, all the advantages of chain drive without the disadvantages. HPE stands for High Performance Endurance.
It also improves drivetrain efficiency, ensuring more power reaches the rear wheel or, conversely, reducing fuel consumption. For the first time, the surfaces of the rollers and bushings are coated with DLC (Diamond Like Carbon), which drastically reduces friction and wear.
Regina deserves the credit for transferring this innovative technology to motorcycle chains with the HPE model.
In cooperation with the renowned chain manufacturer Regina, BMW developed the first chain requiring almost no maintenance, previously offered exclusively by BMW as the M Endurance chain for the high-performance RR. This innovative chain technology is now also available as optional equipment for many models under the HPE (High Performance Endurance) designation!
In combination with the sprocket and chain wheel, manufactured using state-of-the-art processes and precision-engineered from the finest steel, chain lifespan is maximized to the fullest.
The chain kit consists of the chain with a rivet link, along with a front sprocket and rear chain wheel in the original gearing ratio.
The HPE chain requires only minimal care and maintenance.
To preserve the functionality and appearance of your HPE chain, the manufacturer recommends following these care rules:
Clean and lubricate the chain after engine washing, after riding in wet conditions and/or salty or dusty environments. Before winter storage at the end of the season, lubricate the chain at least once a year. Check chain tension every 3,000 km and adjust if necessary. Riders using conventional chains as secondary drive were forced, even with O-ring chains, to clean and lubricate them regularly. Why was this necessary? The reasons are multiple:
Extended lifespan through reduced wear:
Dust and dirt from the road heavily contaminate the chain, especially when off-road riding is involved. Together, they form an aggressive abrasive paste that wears down the chain and contributes to play. If the chain is not cleaned and lubricated properly, this also reduces the service life of the sprocket and chain wheel.
Increased efficiency:
With a well-lubricated chain, friction between rollers and bushings is reduced, particularly during directional changes via sprocket and chain wheel. As a result, more engine power reaches the rear wheel compared to an unlubricated chain. Conversely, with a well-lubricated chain, fuel consumption can be reduced while maintaining the same riding style.
Dirt from grease deposits:
Even with careful maintenance, it is inevitable that chain grease residues end up on the rear wheel rim, swingarm, or the rider’s and passenger’s clothing. The consistency of this grease is sticky and stubborn, as it must adhere to the chain even at high rotational speeds. Cleaning is tedious, and removing it from clothing is sometimes impossible.
Conclusion: The new HPE chain eliminates all these disadvantages!
The transfer of technology comes from mechanical engineering, where similar DLC coatings have long been successfully used on wear-prone tools to significantly extend their service life compared to uncoated tools. Regina deserves credit for applying this innovative technology to motorcycle chains.
